Us 80s and 90s kids remember all the hype and commotion about chia pets. You’re parents wouldn’t buy you a real pet, so you got a chia pet. However, these terra-cotta animals have become part of the hot new health trend, chia seeds. That’s right, chia pets are part of a new health trend_ something just doesn’t feel right about that sentence. But the chia seeds actually sprout from the chia pets themselves!
So what exactly is the deal with chia? Chia used to be all over the airwaves in TV ads 20 to 30 years ago. But today, Chia is getting its resurrection; its second chance at life so to speak in the health foods industry. Chia has become an it nutritional food. Its being baked into cookies, mixed into drinks, made into pudding, and added into cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, and granola bars. Chia can also piggyback on to other popular health trends, such as gluten free and vegan diets. It can be added to breads, waffles, and pancakes for extra fluffiness, and can substitute eggs in vegan goods.
But what really is all the hype about? Why should you incorporate chia into your diet? Chia is rich in omega three fats, protein, antioxidants, and fiber, and it delays your body from feeling hungry as quickly. That’s right it prolongs hunger, so aside from its nutritional punch, chia can help you to shed a few pounds. Chia seeds readily absorb water, forming a gelatinous consistency that takes longer for the body to digest. Thus, youre left with this feeling of fullness longer.

Since the the health food market has become the latest craze, chefs are trying to bring these unique superfoods into the kitchen and on to the menu.
